In the spirit of 3D, we have gone and purchased a Nvidia 3D setup with the “special” (for lack of a better word) 22″ monitor.

When we think 3D, we think… well… 3 dimensions. This is kind of a gimp version of what would normally be considered 3d. Granted, it is a cool feature, but it is lacking in so many areas.

The terrain and objects are just flat. There is no real “curve” to the dimension. This is more than likely due to the graphics engine that wow uses. They have updated their technology here and there over the years, but when it comes down to brass tax, WoW is still using and outdated engine.

Were they to change it, it would cost an incredible amount of money and time and in that span could basically just rework a whole new MMO. Surely as time goes on and provided WoW survives the coming years, there will be an update to the system. Hopefully a WoW ver. 2.  Where it is a whole new world. A Whole new start with the needed updates. Possibly a character migration could take place, but to try and update the current setup would be basically rebuilding the entire game and all of its expansions so the physics and imagery can all work together with the new graphics engine. Simply updating the engine itself has its limits.

In conclusion, yes, the 3D feature is neat. It requires the use of glasses, so it is far from what is considered amazing. Before that technology presents itself and the 3D engine is actually 3D, then I fear this to be just “kinda” cool for the time being. Far from being worth the money. You are probably better off putting that money into some better gear for your rig.

Either way, we are glad to see improvements over the years and are more than impressed with Blizzards skills in the MMO and regular RPG environments. They have been and will be the cream of the crop in computer entertainment for some time. But when it comes to this gray area, it may be bad judgement or a period of transition. We are yet to see.
